Family-run 3* Sterne-Hotel in Neustift

"Der Hoferwirt" was built back in 1674 and is lovingly managed by the Zittera family. From the parsonage to “Kranerwirt” inn with an omnibus-station all the way to the 3* Sterne-Hotel, "Der Hoferwirt" in Neustift has been continuously developed and restored. Around 1674, the simple building that is today "Der Hoferwirt" was originally built in the centre of Neustift under the guidance of Peter Hofer. Back then, even Emperor Maximilian I. often came to Stubaital to go hunting. In the year 1900, Alois Steuxner, known as “Hofer“, bought the Hoferwirt, lavishly rebuilt the “Kranerwirt” inn in 1908 and was recorded as owner in the land register in the year 1920 That’s how "Der Hoferwirt" Tavern got its name, which it has kept to this day. Since 1922, "Der Hoferwirt" has been owned by the Zittera family. Initially, the first telephones and running water came, then all the rooms were renovated and fitted with contemporary amenities. With lots of love for detail and a passion for being hosts, we have made our traditional tavern what it is today: a meeting point for guests and locals alike – a place of well-being in the centre of Neustift.

From Kranerwirt to Hoferwirt

At time of change

The history of our tavern and that of the 3* Sterne-Hotel "Der Hoferwirt" is closely linked with the development of the village of Neustift. The former parsonage housed the first apartment of an independent pastor. In the year 1870, this parsonage was bought by the farmer’s son Peter Hofer from Mieders and converted into “Kranerwirt” inn. With the first entry into the land register in 1900, Alois Steuxner, called Hofer, then became owner of the Hoferwirt which got its name from him.

Time of the first major renovation

In 1899, owner Peter Hofer died. In 1900, Alois Steuxner becomes the new owner of the Hoferwirt and the small manor house with a veranda in Neustift. A generous extension and modernisation followed in 1908. "Der Hoferwirt" would keep this appearance until a further renovation in 1976.

Reconstruction in the Hoferwirt

The mother of Werner Zittera, still a child at the time, lost her husband early and now had her hands full not just taking care of the children. Her drive and motivation were truly admirable and left their impression on the Hoferwirt. The second, third and fourth floor of the house were completely demolished and rebuilt when she was in charge.

A new era begins

Time for renewal

In 1993, the business was handed over to Angelika and Werner Zittera. From this time on, the building was continuously renovated and modernised. The first building project was to add a winter garden to "Der Hoferwirt". This was then followed in 2007 by the rooms being renovated, the external façade and balconies rebuilt and in 2017, logistics, the kitchen and store rooms enlarged.

100 years "Der Hoferwirt"

For 100 years "Der Hoferwirt" has now borne its name, and has been owned by the Zittera family for more than four generations already. From the former parsonage to the “Kranerwirt” and finally to the tavern and 3* Sterne-Hotel "Der Hoferwirt", as it can be found in the centre of Neustift today, it’s been a long road. Characterised by renovation, reconstruction and constant development. Here you can feel the close ties between tradition and modernity.

Zittera host family

"Der Hoferwirt" in Stubaital is a true Tyrolean family business. Angelika Zittera is the kind soul of the house. She makes sure the rooms are clean and tidy, keeps track of the marketing, gives the house a special shine year-round with her decorations and is always available for a nice chat with the guests. Werner Zittera has committed himself fully to the kitchen and farming as well as fish breeding, never losing sight of the origins of Stubai traditional dishes.

The 4th generation

In 2020, son Peter took over the position of head chef from his father and makes sure guests never want for culinary options with his love and passion, also taking care of the farm that yields the produce, hunting and, of course, Tschangelair Hut. Jakob, the younger son, welcomes guests at reception with a deep passion as host. He has now also taken over his mother’s marketing tasks and manages the social media presence of the Hoferwirt with much success.
